Seed specialists from across Asia and Africa have gathered in Korea to learn about technologies that can distinguish new plant species.
The Korea Seed and Variety Service (KSVS) hosted the "Plant Variety Protection and DUS Testing" workshop at its headquarters in Gimcheon, Gyeongsangbuk-do (North Gyeongsang Province) from May 18 to June 7. Fifteen seed specialists from eight nations, including Myanmar, Uganda and Egypt, took part in the workshop. It was designed to share information about plant variety protection systems and related technologies with countries that have recently adopted breed protection laws. So far, some 30 countries from around the world have taken part in the workshop, which has been held eight times since 2007.

Fifteen seed specialists from eight Asian and African nations discuss how to apply for patents on new plant variety and how to register them, during the 'Plant Variety Protection and DUS Testing' workshop.
The workshop showed participants how to register and apply for seed patents on new species, how to conduct variety testing on different crops and how to create action plans to apply what they learned at the workshop. They will now have the chance to introduce seed industry and variety protection systems in their home countries.
Participants also learned how to study characteristics of different crops, methods in line with global testing standards set by the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV). They also studied practical skills related to variety inspection, including how to use molecular markers to distinguish different breeds and how to examine seed-specific diseases. They also visited institutions that develop vegetable and flower breeds and studied how variety protection is actually conducted in a business setting.
