President Park Geun-hye condemned North Korea Sunday for launching a long-range missile as she called on the U.N. Security Council to quickly slap strong sanctions on the North.

"North Korea has committed an unacceptable provocation of launching a long-range missile after conducting a fourth nuclear test," Park said in a meeting of the National Security Council.

North Korea launched a long-range rocket carrying what it claims to be a satellite. Seoul and Washington view the launch as a cover for testing its ballistic missile technology, which is banned under U.N. resolutions.

"The Security Council should quickly come up with strong sanctions," Park said, adding that South Korea and the U.S. should take all necessary measures to counter the threats posed by North Korea.

The Security Council has already been working on a resolution of sanctions on North Korea for carrying out a fourth nuclear test last month.

North Korea is also already under U.N. sanctions for its three previous nuclear tests in 2006, 2009 and 2013.
