On April 12, President Park Geun-hye met with Deputy Secretary-General of the U.N. Jan Eliasson, who is in Korea to attend the seventh World Water Forum 2015 in Daegu.

President Park said that this year is a meaningful year, as it is the 70th anniversary of the U.N.'s establishment, of Korea's independence and of the division of the Korean Peninsula. The president said she hoped that major agenda items pursued by the U.N. would bear fruit. The president said that Korea would closely cooperate with the U.N. and play a role by providing the necessary support, and asked for the U.N.'s interest in inter-Korea issues so that there would be a turning point toward peace and prosperity on the peninsula and across Northeast Asia.

Deputy Secretary-General Eliasson said that this is an important year, too, as three major international conferences will be held this year: the International Conference on Financing for Development in Addis Ababa in July, the U.N. Post-2015 Development Agenda Summit in September, and the COP21 United Nations Conference on Climate Change in Paris in December. Eliasson asked Korea, which has contributed to the global response to climate change, to play its role so that the aforementioned meetings will be successful.

President Park said that adopting the U.N. Post-2015 Development Agenda this year would be a historic milestone that would set the direction for the international community in its efforts to eradicate poverty and to accomplish sustainable development. The president said that a minister-level official will take part in the International Conference on Financing for Development, which will be held prior to the U.N. Post-2015 Development Agenda Summit. President Park said that Korea will try to bridge the differences between developing and developed economies by taking advantage of its own development experience, and contribute to successfully drawing the meeting to a conclusion.

In addition, President Park said that the World Education Forum, which is scheduled to open in Incheon in May, can actually contribute to the educational goals of the Post-2015 Development Agenda. The president said that it is important to establish a new climate change convention this year and that the U.N. needs to play a constructive role in that process. President Park asked for the U.N.'s support and interest in helping the Green Climate Fund, which is based in Korea, to play a key role as part of the new climate change convention.

President Park said that North Korea's continued development of nuclear weapons is a threat to global peace and that there has been little progress in efforts to solve North Korea's human rights abuses, in which the international community has taken great interest. The president said that South Korea and the U.N. can closely cooperate and deliver a consistent, firm message to North Korea.

Deputy Secretary-General Eliasson said that this year is the 70th anniversary of the U.N.'s establishment and of the end of the Second World War. He hoped that it would be a meaningful year and that people will be able to reflect on the lessons of the past and prepare for the future. In addition, he hoped that there would be meaningful progress in pursuing peace on the Korean Peninsula and in solving North Korean's nuclear weapons issues.
