Presidential Speeches

Mar 20, 2024

[Unofficial Translation]

We have reached the end of the third Summit for Democracy. I am pleased that we had a very successful meeting.

I extend my gratitude to the honorable leaders and government representatives as well as to the representatives of civil society and the private sector.

I also would like to thank President William Ruto of Kenya and Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen of Denmark for co-chairing today's meeting.

Honorable participants, Ladies and gentlemen,

Democracy is an essential element in building a strong foundation for global security and prosperity.

The last three summits served as an opportunity to reaffirm our unwavering commitment to this belief.

Leaders from countries sharing universal values, together with those from civil society, the private sector, international organizations, and the academia gathered from all around the world to pool their wisdom on advancing democracy.

Of course, it would be premature to say that the three summits fulfilled our aspirations for global democracy.

Authoritarianism and dis-intellectualism are springing up in many corners of the world, posing a persistent threat to the values and spirit of democracy.

Our conviction and responsibility to confront these challenges are more important than ever. The future of the younger generations and our very own children depends on what we do today.

Building on the outcome of this summit, Korea - together with all democratic nations - will reflect upon the outcomes of the summit and continue to exert our efforts to advance democracy across the globe.

With the closing of this third Summit, the chair’s summary will be presented.

The intense discussions and the experiences and insights we have shared with each other over the past three days have been vividly documented.

Although the third Summit comes to a close today, our great journey for democracy will continue.

Once again, I thank all of you for joining us today.
