Actor Song Joong-ki, currently starring in the hit TV show 'Descendants of the Sun,' is now an honorary ambassador for the Korean tourism board.

The hit TV show "Descendants of the Sun" will now be shinning its light on Korean tourism.

Actor Song Joong-ki will star in a new commercial for Korean tourism. The actor is currently one of the most well-known faces on TV among Korean and Chinese audiences for his performance on the show, which airs its final episode on April 14.

As part of the promotional activities surrounding the "2016-2018 Visit Korea Year," the actor will star in a series of new advertisements that are aimed at promoting tourism in Korea, announced the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Tourism Organization on April 1. He has also been appointed as an honorary ambassador for Korean tourism, said the ministry.

The new tourism commercials in which the renowned actor will star are going to be filmed in locations in Gangwon-do Province such as Taebaek and Jeongseon, both filming locations for the hit show. The theme will be "walk into the story of Korea." The commercials will air both domestically and internationally starting in July, and print ads will also be part of the overall campaign.

These new ads starring Song Joong-ki, building on the popularity of his latest TV show, will play an important role in boosting tourism, the ministry said. The ministry also said that it would continue to develop international campaigns with the actor and target local markets in China, Japan and Southeast Asia.
