The athletes’ village to be used during the upcoming Inchon Asian Games 2014 has officially opened.

Organizers of the 17th Incheon Asiad held the village's opening ceremony at 11:00 a.m. on September 12 in the square of the Guwol Asiad Athlete Village in Incheon. In attendance at the opening ceremony were Minister of Culture, Sports & Tourism Kim Jongdeok, Incheon Mayor Yoo Jeong-bok and Lee Elisa, head of the athletes’ village. Among the 500-odd attendees were five representatives from the North Korean team who had arrived in Korea on September 11.

“Hopefully, the upcoming Incheon Asian Games will serve as a meaningful opportunity to raise awareness of the values of unity and consideration,” said the culture minister during his congratulatory remarks. “I ask all athletes from around the world to do their utmost to return to their homes with good memories and with a good impression of Korea.”

As the opening ceremony wrapped up, Lee, the head of the athletes’ village, declared the village officially open and then had hoisted the official Incheon Asiad flag.

The newly constructed athlete facilities will stay open until October 7. They're made up of three zones: the Residential Zone, the International Zone and the Public Zone.

The village features 2,220 units in 22 apartment buildings across three blocks named after Vichuon, Barame and Chumuro, the three official harbor seal mascots for the games. The International Zone is home to the athletes’ dining hall, an eatery open around the clock.

To check up on the athletes’ physical condition, all kinds of clinics and medical centers, specializing in internal medicine, surgery, otolaryngology, dentistry, ophthalmology and Oriental medicine, as well as emergency rooms and pharmacies, have been put in place.

The village also offers more services and other leisure facilities for the athletes, such as an Internet cafe, a table tennis room, a first person shooter video game shooting range, convenience stores and beauty salons.
