The first floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facility in the world has been built.

Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. (DSME) held a naming ceremony for the platform, dubbing it the FPLNG SATU, at Daewoo’s shipyard in Okpo, on Geojedo Island in southern Korea, on March 4.

Dubbed a “floating plant on the sea,” this ship is the result of an order Daewoo received from the Malaysian state oil and gas corporation Petronas in June 2012.

Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering completes the world's first-ever FLNG facility. This ship allows for all LNG production processes, including drilling the gas in deep seas, purifying, liquefying, storing and loading, to be done on-site. The ship can produce up to 1.2 tons of LNG a year.

An FLNG has advantages in many ways over existing LNG production platforms for underwater gas fields. In the past, a large number of industrial facilities were needed to get the gas drilled from deep under the sea and to get it processed. It required fixed floating equipment in order to send the drilled gas to the land through long-distance pipes. However, an FLNG platform has all the facilities to produce and load LNG on-site. Unlike existing facilities, it doesn't need the large number of industrial facilities. It's much easier to transport the end product, as the ship can move to another gas field after finishing production at one location.

The size of the ship is also remarkable. A floating LNG ship is 3.6 times larger than a soccer field. It's 365 meters long and 60 meters wide, longer than the Eiffel Tower is tall. It can produce up to 1.2 million tons of LNG every year. The production facilities on the ship's deck weigh 46,000 tons. It can store 180,000 square meters of LNG and 20,000 square meters of condensate.

Built by DSME, the first-ever floating LNG ship, named FLNG SATU, is 265 meters long, 60 meters wide and more than three times larger than a soccer field.

Petronas Vice President of Global LNG Projects Datuk Abdullah Karim said, “DSME has the most competitiveness and the best technology in the LNG sector anywhere in the world. Its workers also have top-notch productivity. This is why Petronas ordered Daewoo to build the FLNG.”

DSME President Jung Sung-leep said, “This ship is the ne plus ultra of everything Daewoo has learned and every technology we have developed in the LNG sector since 1992. FLNGs are a new alternative that will change the existing game in the industry.”

Backed by its accumulated technologies, Daewoo has so far built 148 LNG carriers as of last year. The company signed a contract to build the first-ever ice breaker LNG carrier in the world, too, two years ago.
