Korean construction companies are likely to win the contract to build the world’s longest suspension bridge.

The Turkish government announced on Jan. 27 that it has selected a consortium consisting of SK, Daelim and two Turkish builders, Limak and Yapi Merkezi, as its preferred bidder for the 3.7-kilometer Canakkale suspension bridge, dubbed as the “Canakkale 1915 Bridge,” and its adjacent highway.

The project aims at building a 3.7-kilometer suspension bridge across the Dardanelles, to link Lapseki and Gelibolu in Canakkale Province. A total of 24 companies from around the world bid for the project.

When the bridge is completed, it will be longer than the existing longest suspension bridge, the 1.99-kilometer Akashi Kaikyo Bridge in Kobe, Japan. This new bridge will take five years and six months to complete, and Daelim said that the total price will be around TRY 10.35 billion.

The project will be conducted as a "private, build-operate-transfer" infrastructure project. The Daelim-SK consortium will be in charge of bridge management for a total of 16 years and two months, including the construction period.



Construction on the Canakkale 1915 Bridge will begin in March this year and is expected to be completed in 2023. SK E&C will use facilities that it used last year in December to complete the Eurasia Tunnel, which connects the European and Asian continents.
