U.S. President Donald Trump officially confirmed that the NK-U.S. summit in Singapore will be held on June 12 as planned, after a meeting with the North’s Vice Chairman of the Central Committee of the Worker’s Party of Korea Kim Yong Chol at the White House in Washington on June 1.

President Trump also said that he will discuss ending the Korean War, which has been stopped for 65 years via a ceasefire in 1953. There are expectations that the end of war may be declared in the presence of the leaders of the two Koreas and the U.S.

The Korean government welcomed the news of the resumption of the NK-U.S. summit. “As President Trump received a letter from Chairman Kim Jong Un, the passage to the NK-U.S. summit has become broader and firmer,” said Cheong Wa Dae spokesperson Kim Eui-kyeom in a text message sent to correspondents. “We will watch the historic meeting of the century to be held in Singapore with a beating heart, but in a calm manner.”

President Trump’s meeting with Vice Chairman Kim continued for 1 hour and 20 minutes. The letter from Chairman Kim was also delivered to the president during the meeting.

“We’re meeting with the chairman on June 12. And I think it’s probably going to be a very successful process,” said President Trump to journalists after the meeting.

“The big deal will be on June 12,” said Trump. He hinted about the possibility of a second or third summit with the North Korean leader, saying, “We’re not going to go in and sign something on June 12. We’re going to start a process.”

Regarding the possibility of the end of the Korean War, Trump said, “We talked about ending the war. And there is a possibility of something like that.”
