Kim Young Shin The government's new Presidential Committee on New Southern Policy opened its offices in Gwanghwamun, central Seoul, on Aug. 28.
President Moon Jae-in said in July that his administration will establish an organization to work on Korea's New Southern Policy in order to quickly adopt items agreed upon at summits and to connect them with other specific government projects. To start with, the Moon administration formed the new committee as part of the Presidential Commission on Policy Planning.
The committee, under its chief Kim Hyun-chul, who is also a presidential economic advisor, consists of vice ministers from relevant ministries and presidential secretaries.
The committee will be supported by some 30 officers from 14 government organizations.
“We will put together the capability of all government bodies to promote relations with Korea's southern neighbors, such as ASEAN and India,” said the committee. “We will give shape to the New Southern Policy and come up with actual projects through close cooperation among government ministries and diplomatic offices.”
