4 Korean Empire
The National Palace Museum of Korea reopened its Korean Empire wing in February 2017 to shed a new light on that period of Korean history.

The 26th Joseon ruler, King Gojong (r. 1863-1907) formally renamed the Joseon Dynasty as the Korean Empire on Oct. 12, 1897, and declared himself emperor. The empire lasted until 1910. Despite its relatively short 13-year history, however, it left a lot of remains, as the first empire and the first modern country in Korean history.
