President Park Geun-hye saw the progressive play “Finding Kim Jong-wook” with university freshmen in Seoul on February 26 to mark “Culture Day,” the last Wednesday of every month.

“Culture seems to be far from us, but it is much closer than we imagine. We breathe with it in our lives. Culture plays a bridging role to share both our joy and sadness,” said President Park. Mentioning the personal hardships of her earlier life, the president said that she was able to get new energy, hope and power to overcome them thanks to culture.

President Park said that she hopes people will be able to enjoy more plays, art galleries, baseball games and similar activities with the introduction of “Culture Day,” which falls on the last Wednesday of every month, brining new hope and joy to the people and allowing them to enjoy their lives with abundance.

She delivered words of encouragement to the university freshmen who were in the audience with her by saying, “I hope you can think differently and see things from a different point of view during your university life, in order to develop your creativity and to achieve success in your chosen field. I hope that such cultural activities will help you to be happy during your time at university.”

The play “Finding Kim Jong-wook” is about a woman who is looking for her first love, a man she met when she was in India, Kim Jong-wook. The protagonist finds her true self when she breaks her fantasy of the past. The producer and writer of the play, Jang Yoo-jeong, said, “This is the most popular play ever staged in a small theater.” According to Jang, her play has been staged 3,500 times, and a movie of the play was made in 2010. It was recently staged in Japan and its licensing rights have been sold in China, a first for a Korean play.
