A documentary about the late former President Roh Moo-hyun, “Our President,” is setting documentary records across the country.

The film premiered on May 25 amid waves of expectation, just two days after a ceremony to mark the eighth anniversary of the former president’s death.

The movie shows the liberal candidate as he transforms into the head of state. Directed by Lee Chang-jae, an expert on human-focused documentaries, the film brings back memories of the late president, who began his presidential campaign with only 2 percent support in the polls, and eventually became the front-runner. The movie also features a tear-jerking eulogy by 39 of his closest associates -- former aides, friends and, also, incumbent President Moon Jae-in -- who talk about Roh as a human being.

Since it hit the big screen, the documentary has gained rave reviews from audiences and critics alike. There are comments like, “The film appeals to those who haven’t even known or haven’t supported the former president, as they all are intrigued by his dramatic life," as said by critic Yoon Seong-eun. “Roh’s life in and of itself is sort of a hero epic. The film shows that despite his untimely death, his spirit has been brought back to life," said critic Hwang Jin-mi.

According to the Korean Film Council, the documentary was viewed by 78,816 people on its premiere, setting a new record. The previous record, of 8,607 people, was set by the documentary “My Love, Don’t Cross the River” (님아, 그 강을 건너지 마오) in 2013. As of June 6, a total of 1,372,354 people has seen the movie, the highest-ever on record for a documentary.
