The western gates of Gyeongbokgung Palace opened on Dec. 6, for the first time in 43 years.

During the Joseon era, the Yeongchumun Gate was used primarily by civil servants to enter the palace grounds.

The gate was destroyed on several occasions, once following a fire in the late 1500s and a second time during the Japanese occupation in the early 1900s.

The gate you see today was restored in 1975, but remained closed shut, until today.
