The 12th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP12) is just around the corner, and it will be hosted in Korea.

The world's biggest environmental conference will be held in Pyeongchang, Gangwon-do (Gangwon Province), from September 29 to October 17. Some 20,000 people, including representatives from 193 nations, international organizations, non-government organizations and multinational corporations, will attend the biennial conference.

At the conference, participants will discuss various issues about the environment, including the preservation of biodiversity and its appropriate use, and how to share the profits from that use. The Convention on Biological Diversity is one of the top three U.N. environmental agreements, along with the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the U.N. Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).

The conference will consist of the official intergovernmental conference, the seventh meeting of the parties working on the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (COP-MOP 7), high-level meetings and other side events.

The agenda of the 12th conference includes a review of the implementation of the 2020 biodiversity goals and plans as outlined at the 10th conference, held in Nagoya, Japan, in 2010, and will include plans to achieve those goals. The U.N. has declared the period from 2011 to 2020 as the Decade of Biodiversity and has drawn up strategic plans and goals to achieve its environmental aims.

The conference is expected to declare a "Pyeongchang road map" that will give countries a series of benchmarks and goals to measure their progress in terms of cooperating on science and technology, raising capital and improving biodiversity. The Korean government intends to suggest a "Bio-bridge Initiative" as part of its road map goals which will boost cooperation on science and technology.

The high-level ministerial forum held from October 15 to 16 is expected to adopt the "Gangwon Declaration." It will contain the conclusions drawn by conference participants as well as demarcate Korea's interest in enhancing biodiversity and peace near the Demilitarized Zone between South and North Korea.
