The National Assembly held a celebration to mark the 70th anniversary of the nation's Constitution on July 17 in the main hall of the parliamentary building.

July 17 marks the day that the Constitution was enacted in 1948, laying the foundation for today's liberal and open democracy. It is one of the country's five official national holidays. On Constitution Day, a wide range of events are held all across the country to honor Korea's system of constitutional law.

The largest ceremony, held at the National Assembly, was attended by the leaders of the ruling and opposition parties, as well as Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon and Speaker Moon Hee-sang.

“For 70 years, the Republic of Korea has fought for human dignity, values, democracy, peace and, most of all, freedom, equality and human rights. These are the foundation of our Constitution,” said Moon. “Our current system of constitutional law was forged through the blood, sweat and tears of the citizens. It is a magnificent artwork, created by the resistance and struggle of the citizens against authoritarians, showing their desire for democracy.”

“Under the spotlight of the international community, Korea is going through an era of great changes in its political, economic, social and cultural paradigms,” Moon said. “After the Candlelight Revolution and the birth of the current administration, we are now facing challenges to make a completely new Korea. I hope that the values and the spirit of the supreme law that embodies the will of the people -- our citizens -- will be protected forever.”
