About 80 taekwondo athletes compete in the final rounds held in Gwangju on April 28 to qualify for the upcoming Gwangju Summer Universiade 2015.

The taekwondo matches during the Gwangju games, to be held from July 7 to 13, will have approximately 800 athletes from 74 countries from around the world competing in a total of 23 events.

This year’s games, in particular, will have a new addition to the existing events. There will be team events for men and women, a first in Universiade history.

“We are hosting these qualifiers as a run-up to the upcoming Gwangju Universiade,” said an official from the Gwangju Summer Universiade Organizing Committee. “We are hosting this contest at the same venue and in the same manner to get fully ready for the Gwangju games. We will strive to make the Gwangju games an economical and efficient global event, by carefully taking feedback from the International University Sports Federation and from the World Taekwondo Federation.”
