Young taekwondo practitioners from all across the world recently had fun in Korea, showing off their martial art abilities.

The “2015 World Children Taekwondo Culture Festival,” jointly hosted by the World Children Taekwondo Union and the Taekwondo Promotion Foundation, brought together young practitioners from around the world at the Taekwondowon in Muju-gun County, Jeollabuk-do Province (North Jeolla Province), from Aug. 7 to 11.

Under the slogan of, “Children are the hope of the future for the global community,” the event invited more than 3,000 young martial artists, all under the age of 13, from about 30 countries, including Germany, Italy, China and Malaysia. The participants are all enrolled in a taekwondo academy in their home countries that is run by a Korean coach.

Throughout the five-day festival, the sport solidified the close bonds among the world’s taekwondo families. Parents became coaches themselves, training on some skills together with their own sons and daughters and other young martial artists, too. Some families came up to the stage, demonstrating some taekwondo techniques and board-breaking skills together in front of the audience.

The young athletes also had time to enjoy the magnificent nature that surrounds Muju and experience many of the traditions of the nation. They were wowed by picturesque views as they reached the national park along the slopes of Deogyusan Mountain and Maisan Mountain in Jinan-gun County. They also learned about traditional samulnori percussion music and dance at the Jeonju Traditional Culture Center.

“Hopefully, through the sport, this festival has given the promising young athletes hopes and dreams, and has helped in some degree to globalize the sport,” said Hwang Jeong-su, mayor of the county.

“I hope taekwondo will reach more people worldwide and that more people will get the chance to have hopes and dreams practicing the sport themselves,” the mayor added.
