King Sejong Station was established on King George Island in 1988 to observe climate changes in the continent and see how plants adapt to the extreme cold weather. Currently there are 17 researchers residing in the base.

During a recent bilateral summit, President Park and Chilean President Michelle Bachelet discussed cooperating on Antarctic research and how best to preserve and utilize the continent. King Sejong Station is expected to be an important foothold for bilateral cooperation.
