President Moon Jae-in urged Korean and Japanese lawmakers to play a more active role in promoting the Seoul-Tokyo relationship.

President Moon met with members of the Japan-Korea Parliamentarians' Union, many of whom were visiting Korea specifically to attend the meeting in Seoul, at Cheong Wa Dae on Aug. 21.

In the meeting, the president said, “Korea and Japan are very close neighbors, both geographically and culturally, and the two must act together to jointly respond to North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats.”

The Japanese side was led by Fukushiro Nukaga and the Korean side by Representative Kang Chang-il.

“I hope Seoul and Tokyo can work together to overcome the serious security situation in the region,” he said.

President Moon also mentioned the upcoming PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games. He said, “I wish this series of international sporting events scheduled to be held across Northeast Asia can offer an opportunity for all three countries to achieve development in their bilateral relationships and for peace and prosperity in the region.”
