Minister of National Defense Song Young-moo held talks with U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis at the Pentagon on Aug. 30.

The two defense chiefs stressed the need to strengthen core military capabilities and to improve ROK-U.S. defense readiness in order to deter and defend against North Korean threats.

They emphasized the fact that a strong, effective and credible military response option increases the credibility of current diplomatic efforts aimed at denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula.
