The two Koreas have agreed to modernize the roads that run alongside the Gyeongeui train line from Gaeseong to Pyeongyang and alongside the Donghae train line that goes from Goseong to Wonsan. A joint investigation into road modernization will begin in early August.

Chief delegates from South and North Korea held high-level talks about modernizing their road networks and connecting the roads between the two Koreas. They announced a joint press release after the meeting on June 28.

The joint press release said that, “The modernization of the roads along the Gyeongeui and Donghae train lines has important significance for the balanced development and common prosperity of Korea’s economy,” and noted that in the future the two Koreas would carry out this joint project simultaneously.

The joint investigation will start along the Gyeongeui train line. Regarding the scope of construction and the level of modernization, the roads, structures, safety features and operating facilities of the relevant sections of road are to be decided, based on international standards, while regional characteristics are also taken into consideration.

Meanwhile, follow-up measures to the April 27 Panmunjeom Declaration are continuing. In order to prepare for the family reunions that are scheduled to be held at Geumgangsan Mountain on in North Korea between Aug. 20 and 26, a facility inspection team from South Korea visited the venues, traveling north along the Donghae line, on June 27. They're scheduled to stay there for four days.
