Gwanghwamun Square turned into a citizens' car-free plaza

During the New Year holiday season, Gwanghwamun Square and both sides of the square will be transformed into a resting place for citizens with no cars. On Jan. 1 and 2, traffic will be totally excluded from the area from between 18:00 to 23:00.
Various cultural events, including the Seoul Festival of Lights 2009
Seoulites are able to enjoy various cultural events, including the Seoul Festival of Lights 2009, at Gwanghwamun Square, with the festival site being closed to traffic during the New Year holiday season. Since Dec. 19, the Seoul Festival of Lights 2009 has been held in the ice-skating rinks of Gwanghwamun Square, helping visitors get into the mood for the winter festivities.
In addition, an exhibition of the Fractal Turtleship by legendary video artist Paik Nam-june is being held at Gwanghwamun Square from 19:00 to 20:00, everyday. Adding to this, the world-class digital façade is on display on screens blanketing the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts and the KT Building on both sides of Gwanghwamun Square. Also, a variety of cultural events, including wishing for hope in the New Year and a parade of traditional costumes, are planned for the New Year holiday season.
