A Korean-built state-of-the-art classroom was opened in a high school in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, on January 14. The classroom focuses on information and communications technology (ICT) and the use of high tech in education. Among the 70-odd people present at the opening ceremony at the Zarifa Aliyeva High School were Azerbaijani Deputy Minister of Education Ceyhun Bayramov and other education officials.

“We are happy to learn from Korea how to apply ICT to education with the opening of this ‘ICT classroom,’” said Deputy Minister Bayramov. “It will become an important opportunity to further develop e-learning in Azerbaijan and to expand bilateral exchanges in the use of ICT in education.”

The Korean Ministry of Education’s program to build a classroom that emphasizes ICT is designed to share Korea’s experience in e-learning and applying ICT in the classroom and to reduce the gap in the use of ICT in education around the world.

The program begins with an analysis of the demand and conditions for applying ICT to education in the targeted countries. Then, the ministry builds one or two “ICT classrooms” there. The program includes training teachers on how to use ICT devices and how to upgrade their ICT skills. In the end, the results of the program are analyzed and reflected in the ongoing plan.

The “ICT classroom” is equipped with an electronic board, an electronic lecture desk, a computer server and tablet PCs for students, among other things. It is designed to use ICT devices, solutions and content and allow interactive education to be catered to students at different levels.

The ministry built “ICT classrooms” in Brunei, Colombia and Indonesia in 2011, in Mongolia and the Philippines in 2012 and in Cambodia and Azerbaijan in 2013.
